Serrated Knife
Sharpeners
Serrated knives take special care and require a special kind
of serrated knife sharpeners that will not
degrade their fine edges by burring them. Straight or normal
knife sharpeners will work great for normal blades but not for
these delicate serrated knives.
How serrated knife sharpeners
work
Many professional blade sharpeners come ready to sharpener
serrated knives. They have special cone shaped honing diamond
material which are designed to sharpen inside each serrated tip
and tiny edge.
Specialized serrated knife
sharpeners
Specialized electric serrated knife sharpeners will
sharpen each tip or serration separately. Make sure not to
widen the gap of each serration and be sure to only sharpen one
side of the serration or tip because the other side is designed
to support and is not made to be sharpened.
Be careful because once you ruin the tips, it will not be
possible to bring the knife back to factory newness. If you do
mess up the tips then you could still sharpen the blade
regulary and use it as a straight knife and will get a lot of
life out of it still.
Another option to a professional electric knife sharpener is
to use a diamond sharpening rod. These are thin, round rods
that can sharpen each tip. Carefully stand the rod up and
stroke each tip up and down along the sharpening rod. This
obviously take much more time, patience, and precision than
using a professional electric knife sharpener but it does work
well if you take your time.
Don't ruin the serrated
knife
Remember that serrated blades are hard to bring back to new. So
make sure not to over sharpen the knife because this will cut
each tip down significantly and render the knife much less
effective. The way that serrated knives are constructed, they
break down easily and must be taken care of. The good thing
about these kind of knives is they don’t need sharpening as
much as straight blades because of their saw like blade. They
don’t get dull as fast as a regular knife does.
Conclusion
If you have a serrated knife then you want to be sure to use
either a specialized serrated knife sharpener or a
professional electric serrated
knife sharpener for best results and longer knife
use.
